The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has scheduled the timetable for the revision of the Permanent Voter Register in preparation for the 2025 General Election. According to the Presidential, Parliamentary, and Councilors' Election Act No. 1 of 2024, the revision of the register takes place twice within the period starting immediately after the general election and before the nomination day.
The revision of the Permanent Voter Register is crucial for several reasons:
1. Ensuring Updated Voter Information – It allows for the registration of new eligible voters and the removal of deceased or ineligible individuals, ensuring accuracy in the voter database.
2. Enhancing Electoral Credibility – A well-maintained register reduces the chances of electoral fraud, such as multiple voting or impersonation, thereby improving the credibility of elections.
3. Facilitating Voter Participation – By updating the register, more citizens, especially those who have reached voting age, get the opportunity to participate in the democratic process.
